The door across from my room was open and I stopped. Had that been opened before? Was Mom in there now? Could she possibly be fixing those pants for me?

I tiptoed over and peeked into the room. Empty. The case still covered the sewing machine, all dusty. My pants lay folded neatly on the chair next to the table. It was wishful thinking to expect differently.

In my room, I turned on the computer, slipped in the memory card and started photoshop. I worked on the picture of the man in the park. If I could just manipulate the slope of his shoulders, graft a little off the side of his face, it’d be perfect. Once satisfied with the results I printed out a copy and pasted it into a little black album. For you, Mom. I’m nearly done. I closed it gently and returned it to my bottom drawer, turned the key and stuffed it in my bag. I stared at Dad’s likeness on the computer screen. Oh how different things would be if you were still here. But maybe these pictures will help. They had to help.
